Which is the better PA sandwich?
Pennsylvania is home of the Liberty Bell, the Keystone and half a dozen spectacular sports teams. I can think of two more things about PA that are just as delicious, the Philly cheesesteak and the Primanti Brothers sandwich. Both sandwiches hit the spot but reflect two very different PA regions. The Philly cheesesteak, which was invented in the 1930’s and remains a city staple to this day. The Philly is made up sliced steak, topped with melted cheese all on a roll. Some of the best places to get a Philly include Tony Luke’s, Pat’s Steaks and Geno’s Steaks.
Moving to the other side of the state, Primanti Brothers is the place to get Pittsburgh’s favorite sandwich. Also invented in the 30’s, this meal-wich was intended to feed the blue collar mine workers who didn’t have the utensils to eat a full dinner while on the job but needed something to fill them for the long hours of work ahead. Thus the meat, cole slaw, and French fries between two pieces of thick Italian bread was born. Many have tried to replicate the Primanti’s sandwich, but few have succeeded. My personal favorite, and this is a tough, tough choice, is the Primanti’s! What is yours?
